Who must register for COID/COIDA?

If you’ve appointed one or more employees, you’re required to register with the Compensation Fund. The official Compensation Fund portal frames it exactly like that (“Have you appointed 1 or more employees? You are required to register…”).

The COIDA Service Booklet makes it even clearer: all employers who employ one or more part-time/casual/temporary or full-time employees for business activities must register, and you should register within 7 days after the first employee is employed.

How often is COIDA paid?

The assessment is described as annual. Gov.za explains that every year in April the Compensation Fund sends a Notice of Assessment telling you how much to pay.

The Labour site also explains the same timing: from April every year, the Fund sends notices of assessment, and it’s not always predictable exactly when you’ll receive yours.

What is a COID registration number, and what is it used for?

After employer registration, the Compensation Fund issues a CF registration number starting with 99… (12 digits).
